Forklift Safety Tip #27 Parking Forklifts In Front Of Doorways And Exits?

It’s important for each company to allocate set areas for parking forklifts so that operators know exactly where they should and should not leave their machines. Parking areas should be clear of walkways, doorways, first aid stations, fire fighting equipment, on a sloping surface, emergency exits, where it is obstructing other traffic or no less than two meters from any railway track.

Unless set areas are allocated, operators have a habit of leaving forklifts where ever they like. Leaving thoroughfares clear can be essential for keeping productivity and traffic flow high. Doorways should be kept clear at all times so that they can be used as a form of exit in case of an emergency or so emergency workers can get access to a building during an emergency.

Walkways need to be marked and kept clear to keep pedestrians safe and to reduce accidents and injury. Parking in front of first aid and fire fighting appliances will not only slow up any emergency response time but can also wreak havoc with your insurance coverage if a claim needs to be made.

Basically, it’s up to you and your company to allocate set parking areas around your worksite to ensure things run smoothly.
