Forklift Safety Tip #24 How Fast Are Forklifts Allowed To Travel?

Many people ask us, “What is the maximum speed that forklifts are allowed to travel”. The answer: There is no set speed of travel.

The acceptable speed is defined as a slow, safe speed taking into consideration such things as ground conditions, the environment, traffic, employees and general public who may enter the work area.

In other words, it’s up to you and your company to decide upon acceptable speeds for each area on your worksite. Most companies adopt a walking speed or slower policy when ever forklifts are being used around pedestrians. Walking pace is usually around 5 kph.

Basically, it’s up to each company to assess danger areas where operators should travel more slowly and adopt procedures for ensuring drivers know and follow the appropriate speed limits. Some even go as far as putting speed limiters on the forklifts to force them to slow down in certain areas.
