Forklift Safety Tip #4 - Forklift Safety Checks
This week I want to talk to you about forklift (and other machine) safety checks. A lot of companies aren't aware that they are required to perform some sort of documented, regular checks on their forklifts and other industrial equipment.
So I'm going to clear it up for you now.
Many companies have been fined for not being able to prove to a WorkCover inspector that regular checks are being conducted. Basically, it's up to your company to evaluate how often machine checks are carried out, as well as who's responsible for conducting them. Most large companies with multiple forklifts make their drivers perform a routine check on their forklift before starting each shift.
A checklist is kept either on the forklift itself, or in a designated area. This checklist is signed, dated and kept as evidence of the company ensuring each machine is adequately maintained. Companies with one or two forklifts and very few operators may get away with a weekly or monthly check, depending on how much use their forklifts get.
Some of the benefits of having regular checks performed on each machine are:
- Easy to find faults and repair them while they are still miner.
- More reliable machines and less chance of down time due to breakage.
- Easier to identify bad drivers and staff causing damage.
- Protection against WorkCover fines and insurance problems when an accident occurs.
