Forklift Safety Tip # 23 Alcohol And Other Drugs In The Workplace.

This week I want to talk to you about developing a drug and alcohol policy for your workplace. In this day and age, drug use is fairly wide spread and can often find its way into the workplace.

To protect yourself, your company and your staff from drug related accidents it’s important to adopt a strict no tolerance policy to drugs and alcohol. There is absolutely no place for drugs and alcohol around forklifts.

It’s important that your staff know what to do when they suspect a coworker is under the influence of alcohol or drugs so that the situation is handled properly. When mishandled, accidents, grievances and even law suites can occur.

I suggest implementing a strict no tolerance policy. Forklift operators should know that no alcohol or drugs (be it illegal or subscription) are allowed. If they are under the influence, they’re not to operate any equipment.

If you'd like a copy of WorkCover’s “GUIDE TO DEVELOPING A WORKPLACE ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUGS POLICY” for you to keep on file, email nathan@ausforklifttraining.com.au
